Friday night sees Eskimos, Thunderbirds and Gold Miners skate to wins

SUDBURY – Game action in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Friday saw the Abitibi Eskimos, Soo Thunderbirds and Kirkland Lake Gold Miners all post victories.

ABITIBI ESKIMOS 5 ESPANOLA RIVERMEN 3 – Visiting Abitibi built up a three-goal cushion and then withstood a third period comeback attempt to defeat the Rivermen at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

The Eskimos took a 1-0 lead after one period of play thanks to a Jacob Kenney effort six and half minutes into the contest.

Corbin Bean pulled the home side level at the 7:56 mark of the middle stanza only to see Abitibi strike three times in just under three minutes to go ahead 4-1 after heading to the second intermission.

Notching those markers were Shane Hiley, Tommy Labrecque and Brady Cloutier.

The final stanza saw Espanola pulled to within one on tallies by Brandon Janke and Bean with 2:43 remaining in regulation, but Hiley iced it potting his second of the night as he found the back of an empty net with two seconds remaining to close things out.

Erik Robichaud dished out three assists to aid the offensive cause for the winners.

Sylvain Miron earned the triumph for the Eskimos making 28 saves helping Abitibi improve to 4-4-0-2 on the season.

Alex Chandler started for the Rivermen alowing four goals on21 shots and suffered the loss as his club slipped to 8-4.

Espanola’s Brennen Dubchak also saw an eight-game goal and point streak snapped in the defeat.

SOO THUNDERBIRDS 6 ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 2 – Surging Sault Ste. Marie won for the fifth straight game and ninth time in 10 outings as the stopped the Bobcats at Centennial Arena.

The Thunderbirds got a pair of goals from Anthony Miller along with a tally and two helpers from Gavin Burbach to lead the T-Birds to victory.

Daniel Pyymaki, Tyler Jones and Owen Headrick also supplied singles for the Sault as they raised the record to 10-2 on the campaign.

Dylan Sakatch had both goals for Elliot Lake while Brad Holman picked up a pair of helpers.

Rookie netminder Brian Kment remained unbeaten in his career making 27 saves as he improved to 5-0.

Etienne Roy faced 32 attempts in the loos for the Bobcats.

KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS 2 NORTH BAY TRAPPERS 1 (2OT) – A Mathieu Lecompte goal 24 seconds into the second overtime lifted Kirkland Lake to the narrow triumph over North Bay.

Following a scoreless first Dylan Rosen gave the Gold Miners the lead 7:43 into the middle session.

North Bay would force OT in the late going as Zachary Shankar notched the equalizer with 89 seconds left in regulation.

The first five-minute OT solved nothing with Lecompte ending it early in the second extra frame to help Kirkland Lake improve to 10-1 on the campaign.

Jessie Morin made 18 stops in picking up the win while Evan Cormier helped the Trappers register a point with a solid 38-save performance.

Despite the triumph Gold Miners’ forward Steven Babin saw a league-high 10-game point streak come to an end.
