Janke, Bean, Dubchak pace Espanola past Blind River

BLIND RIVER – The Espanola Rivermen trio of Brandon Janke, Corbin Bean and Brandon Janke combined for nine points to lead their club to a 6-2 triumph over the hometown Blind River Beavers Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Community Centre.

After going scoreless through the first half of the opening period, Espanola struck three times in a five-minute span to go up 3-0 after 20 minutes on efforts by Janke, Duane Wainman and Byron Sam.

It was more of the same in the second stanza with Janke, Ryan Atwood and Dubchak’s league-leading 19th goal of the season all finding the mark.

Battling back the Beavers got on the board early in the third as Jake Zarzycki found the back of the net on the power play at the 1:28 mark.

Tyler Shanush then added one more for the home side as he rounded out the offensive numbers in the contest notching his team-best ninth marker of the campaign.

Along with Dubchak topping all NOJHL shooters in tallies, teammates Janke and Bean now share the overall league scoring lead with 37 points apiece.

Joakim Jutras ended up making 40 stops to record the win while Matt Young saw 26 shots fired his way in a losing cause with Dylan Knox turned aside all 14 attempts he faced in just over 25 minutes of relief for the Beavers.

With the victory Espanola won their third straight and fifth out of their past six as they improved to 15-8 on the season.

In defeat Blind River is mired in a nine-game winless drought and also only has one victory in their last 17 outings as their overall record fell to 4-17-0-1.

NOJHL action resumes tonight as the North Bay Trappers host the league-leading Soo Thunderbirds in a 7 p.m. start at West Ferris Arena.
