POWASSAN, Ont. – A Mathieu Comeau marker nearly seven minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Hearst Lumberjacks went on to defeat the Powassan Voodoos 3-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos held the edge in shots in a scoreless opening 20 minutes with goalkeepers Tristan Boileau, of Hearst, and Powassan’s Daniel Dirracolo doing their part between the pipes.

In the second period, the Lumberjacks broke the stalemate deep into the session when Owen Hey found the mark at 16:22 when he whipped one in from the slot off a nice feed from Liam Boswell.

A late power play helped the home side pick up an equalizer as Chase Thompson jammed one in from the left of the crease to see him run a point streak to five in succession.

Heading to the third period, Hearst went back on top at 6:54 when Boswell set-up Comeau in the left circle where he ripped one upstairs on Dirracolo for his seventh goal and 20th point of the season.

Remaining 2-1 until the final moments, Powassan got their goalie out for an extra attacker to try and tie it and force overtime, but the Lumberjacks’ DonHeaven Veilleux corralled a loose puck at his own blueline and sent a long-range play ahead that bounced into the empty net to secure the road victory.

The win sees Hearst move to 11-9-3-1 on the year, while in defeat Powassan drops 15-9-0-2.
