NOJHL alumni earn OHL accolades
SUDBURY – A trio of goaltenders, who are Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League alumni, have earned recognition for their play in the Ontario Hockey League in 2014-15.
Jake Paterson and Ken Appleby are two of six finalists for the OHL goaltender of the year award while Evan Cormier was named to the league’s second all-rookie team.
Paterson saw action in 50 OHL regular season contests with both the Kitchener Rangers and Saginaw Spirit picking up 26 victories along the way, including three shutouts.
In his NOJHL days he helped backstop the Soo Eagles to a league championship back in 2011.
As for Appleby, his efforts saw him share the OHL’s award this season for allowing the fewest goals-against against with the Oshawa Generals.
The 19-year-old from North Bay led the league with a 2.08 goals-against-average and also posting a league-high save percentage of .924. His 38 victories was also a franchise record.
Appleby suited up for Kirkland Lake as a rookie in the NOJHL back in 2011-12.
Meanwhile Cormier earned second team OHL all-rookie squad accolades starting the campaign in North Bay before heading to the Saginaw Spirit.
The 17-year-old Cormier was named a second team NOJHL all-star last season where, as the youngest player in the league, he faced more shots against than any goaltender in the league at 1,310 with the then North Bay Trappers.
