Powassan powers past Mattawa

POWASSAN – The Powassan Voodoos got four goals from Brendan D’Agostino and three from Nathaniel McLeod Monday evening to help them fly past the Mattawa Blackhawks 10-5 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The hometown Voodoos grabbed a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on a pair of power play markers by McLeod and D’Agostino.

It became 6-1 before the midway point of the contest as the goals came in rapid succession in the first half of the middle stanza.

After Dante Juris increased the Powassan cushion 25 seconds into the second, Mattawa got on the board courtesy of a shorthanded effort off the stick of C.J. Nicholson.

Undeterred the Voodoos answered right back on the same power play for their third extra man tally off the evening thanks to Aaron Dart.

Additional even strength tallies from D’Agostino and McLeod put Powassan in control with half a game yet to be played.

The two sides added to the count in the latter stages of the period with Hayden Hickey and Andy Williams connecting on the power play for the Blackhawks while D’Agostino countered with another pair and he finished off his first NOJHL hat trick at 18:32 and four-goal performance with six seconds left in the frame.

Marco Luciani brought the Blackhawks closer 75 seconds into the third only to see McLeod cap off his three-tally night a couple minutes later.

Mattawa’s Jimmy Philbin and then Powassan’s Jacob Erwin rounded out the totals in the high-scoring affair.

Shots on goal favoured winners 39-29 with Jack Ondrovic picking up the victory.

Joe Sheppard started for the Hawks and suffered the loss allowing six against while Josh Horner gave up four in relief.

Next up on the NOJHL slate has the Voodoos visiting the Sudbury Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena.
