Scott shines as Elliot Lake tops Powassan
POWASSAN – Connor Scott scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner to help lead the Elliot Lake Wildcats to a 5-3 triumph over the Powassan Voodood Saturday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The contest was scoreless into the latter stages of the opening period when the Wildcats’ Alec MacKenzie put his side in front at 15:55.
Scott made it 2-0 a minute and a half later as Elliot Lake took a two-goal lead into the middle session.
The lone tally in that second period came off the stick of Powassan’s Jake Staples at 7:39.
Wildcats’ defenceman Nathan Campbell struck just 32 seconds into the third to put the visitors back up by two while Adam Baxter notched the eventual game-winner at 3:01.
A David Sherman power play marker brough the Voodoos closer, but Scott answered that with one of his own during a man advantage to make it 5-2 with over half a period to play.
Powassan managed one more with four minutes to left on a Garry Mindus goal, but that’s as close as the Voodoos would get before time expired.
Shots on goal favoured Elliot Lake 33-32 with A.J. Smith picking up the win and Matt Young the loss.
