Sudbury takes 2-0 series lead on Elliot Lake
SUDBURY – Sudbury Nickel Barons captain Jacob Bonin had the game-winner and set-up two others to help his side rally with a four-goal third period and a 5-2 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Saturday night in Game 2 of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League West Division semifinal at McClelland Arena.
With the win, Sudbury now leads the best-of-seven series 2-0 with Game 3 set for Monday at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.
Jimmy Roy got things going for the home side midway through the first before the Wildcats responded with the equalizer off the stick Adam Baxter at the 14-minute mark.
Elliot Lake went in front with the lone tally of the middle session as Cole Hepler connected on the power play at 15:36.
The Nickel Barons tied it with a man advantage marker of their own early in the third as Dylan Callaghan scored at 2:27.
Bonin then notched the eventual decider seven minutes later to put Sudbury up front for good.
Roy’s second of the evening made it 4-2 at 12:07 before Callaghan iced it with an empty netter in the late going to round out the scoring.
Eric Champagne also had a couple of helpers to aid the Nickel Barons offensive cause.
Jessie Morin was solid between the pipes for Sudbury in picking up the win as he finished with 41 stops on the night.
A.J. Smith allowed four of the five against for the Wildcats and suffered the loss as he faced 39 shots in defeat.
