POWASSAN, Ont. – The surging Timmins Rock erupted for five third period goals Saturday to win their 12th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game in a row in dumping the Powassan Voodoos 7-4 at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The outcome also sees Powassan’s 10-game winning streak come to an end.
The Voodoos took flight eight and a half minutes into the contest when Mathieu MacMillan took a one-handed chip up from Carson Ricci, then darted into the Timmins zone where he pulled up at the top of the left circle and patiently waited before firing a sizzler past the blocker of Rock netminder Patrick Boivin.
Pressing hard for an equalizer into the second stanza, Timmins got just that as Yan Bessette quickly slammed in a feed from behind the net at 7:25.
Powassan retook the lead with a man advantage effort courtesy of Ryan Patrick at 16:39 as he guided in a Chase Strychaluk set-up from the right of Boivin.
Answering with another tying tally before the intermission when Chase Longhurst made no mistake from the slot as he whipped in his first of the season in beating Voodoos’ netminder Daniel Dirracolo.
In the third, the Rock took the lead two and a minutes in as Bessette sent Nicolas Pigeon ahead on a odd-man rush where he fed Brady Harroun who stuffed in his league-leading 39th goal of the campaign.
Coming right back, Timmins tacked on another with an open Bessette converting from close range.
Not done there, Nicholas Frederick snagged a loose puck in front and tucked it past the outstretched pad of Dirracolo while his club had a man advantage.
Frederick then added another power play marker with a quick one-timer from the right side to continue the offensive outburst.
Strychaluk and Alex Little got a couple back for Powassan, but Harroun capped off the road victory in the late going with his 40th as he lifted a backhand from just outside the blueline into an empty net to seal the result.
With the win, the Rock move to 38-6-3-2 and in defeat, the Voodoos fall to 33-12-1-0.
