Walker scores 2 as Bobcats edge Gold Miners 2-1

ELLIOT LAKE – Jared Walker’s second goal of the night, six and a half minutes into the second period, proved to be the difference as the Elliot Lake Bobcats edged the visiting Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 2-1 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena.

Special teams allowed the Gold Miners to take the lead at 13:11 of the first as defenceman Jonathon Langford unleashed a power play shot past Bobcats netminder Alex Bitsakis.

Walker answered right back for Elliot Lake as he tied it a minute and a half later.

Entering the middle frame Walker buried the winner in what would turn out to be the final tally of the night.

Bitsakis was impressive in the Bobcats’ net finishing the night with 38 saves.

Jeremy Pominville also had a solid evening, despite the loss, as he made 39 stops in defeat.

Of note, Elliot Lake also found out after the game just who their opening round opponent in the playoffs will be.

After Espanola rallied to beat Sudbury 4-3 it meant the Rivermen will finish third in the NOJHL standings, which puts the Abitibi Eskimos in fourth.

As the No. 5 seed the Bobcats will take on Abitibi in quarter-final play with that best-of-seven set getting underway next week.

Kirkland Lake will take on North Bay in another quarter-final, Espanola will take on the Nickel Barons in a third series while the No. 1 ranked Soo Thunderbirds will tangle with the No. 8 Blind River Beavers in the other.
