COCHRANE, Ont. – The Timmins Rock saw Josh Dickson tally twice, including collecting the game-winner, and added an assist in leading his side to a 6-1 victory over the Cochrane Crunch in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at Tim Horton Events Centre.
Getting the day’s scoring going was Timmins’ captain Derek Seguin at 14:16 of the first period as he took a nifty little back-hand pass from Evan Beaudry and skated into the left faceoff circle where he wired a rising shot past Cochrane netminder Michael Nickolau, during a man advantage opportunity.
The Rock had a glorious opportunity to extend their lead in the frame as Graeme McCrory was in all alone, but was stymied by the outstretched left pad of Nickolau as the lanky goalkeeper made a tremendous save on the play.
Moving to the middle stanza, some quick work by the visitors midway through the contest saw them tack on two more tallies.
Dickson got the first one as he banged in a rebound from the left of the crease off a Lucas Branch blast from the right wing at 9:03.
Then, just over a minute later, McCrory fed Eric Moreau in the slot as he joined an odd-man rush and snapped in a shot high glove side to extend the Timmins’ cushion.
The Crunch got on the board late in the second when Sebastien Ouimet finished off a nice surge up the ice from in close and he lifted a backhander just over the blocker of Tyler Masternak in the Rock goal.
Up a skater in the third, Timmins converted with the extra man as Tyler Schwindt set-up in front of the neatly deflected an attempt from the left point.
On the power play again a few shifts later, Dickson made it 5-1 with his second of the afternoon and third point.
Tyler Gilberds added one more for the guests in the back half of the frame as he finished off a nice dash into Cochrane territory and went high, left side, for his fifth marker of the season and wrap-up the scoring.
Masternak finished with 11 saves to collect the win while a busy Nickolau faced 54 shots against in defeat.
The teams are back at it Wednesday in a 6:30 p.m. start in Cochrane and on HockeyTV.com.
