5-point night for Mathieu as Timmins tops Iroquois Falls

TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock received two goals and three assists from Wayne Mathieu to help his side double up the Iroquois Falls Eskis 8-4 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Wednesday evening at McIntyre Arena.

The Rock got off to a quick start with Tyler Romain staking the home side to an early lead 1:43 into the contest.

Timmins tacked on another in the opening moments of the second period when Jordan Rendle notched his 30th goal of the season at the 57-second mark of the middle frame.

Cory Sprague supplied one more for the Rock at 5:18 before the NOJHL’s leading offensive producer among defencemen, in the Eskis’ Josh Dejulio, picked up his 11th marker and 48th point midway through the contest.

Special teams allowed Timmins to get that back at 14:20 as Mathieu scored on the power play to make it 4-1.

They then tallied for a fourth time in the session with Grant McClellan finding the back of the net at 18:09.

Bain Cunningham added to Rock cushion five and half minutes into third, but Iroquois Falls came right back with markers 66 seconds apart as Dillan Bruce picked up his 25th and Ryan Gruszka’s 13th brought the visitors closer.

A man advantage effort from defenceman Jared Hester at 9:47 and one more from Mathieu added to the Rock cushion while Shadow Reuben picked up his 28th for the Eskis on a power play to finish off the high-scoring affair.

Rendle dished out three assists for the hosts to go along with his tally.

Al Rogers made 31 saves in the Timmins victory in picking up the win.

Trevor Hawkes started for Iroquois Falls and suffered the setback giving up five on 37 shots in 40 minutes of work while Ty Sparling stopped nine of 12 in third period relief.
