Bobcats, Rivermen and Gold Miners all skate to Friday victories

SUDBURY – Three games on the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League slate Friday evening saw the home team come out on top in each contest as Elliot Lake, Espanola and Kirkland Lake all came away victorious.

ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 5 BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 1 – A four-goal second period propelled Elliot Lake to their franchise-record fourth consecutive victory in defeating Blind River at Centennial Arena.

Jacob Irwin notched the lone tally of the opening frame to put the Bobcats up after 20 minutes.

After Tyler Shanush knotted the affair early in the middle stanza Elliot Lake connected four times in just over 12 minutes to take control.

Notching those tallies for the home side were Dustin Cordeiro, David Becker, Bret Wagner and Aaron Carmichael.

The home team put it away in the third getting markers from a trio of different skaters with captain Kyle Rowe, John Waghorne and Aviv Milner all finding the back of the net.

Etienne Roy finished with 31 saves to register the victory while Shaun Gerbinski saw 45 shots fired his way in defeat.

ESPANOLA RIVERMEN 3 SUDBURY NICKEL BARONS 2 – Espanola stormed out to an early first period lead and withstood a comeback attempt in final session by Sudbury to pull out the triumph.

Ryan Theriault put the Rivermen out in front just nine seconds after the opening face-off.

Duane Wainman and Brandon Janke added later efforts to put the home side up three after 20 minutes.

Neither side would find the back of the net in the second as Espanola carried the three-goal lead into the third.

Brody Brunet put the Nickel Barons on the board four minutes into the final frame while Jimmy Roy made it a 3-2 game with 4:18 remaining.

However Brennen Dubchak’s league-leading 18th marker of the season iced it for the Rivermen as he found the empty net with four seconds remaining.

Shots on goal favoured Espanola by a 34-27 margin with Marc Terriault picking up the win and Michael Muzyka and Andrew Lefebvre both listed as seeing time between the pipes for the Nickel Barons.

KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS 5 SOO THUNDERBIRDS 2 – The top two clubs in the NOJHL took to the ice with the second place Gold Miners skating to victory at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Everett Thompson tallied twice in the triumph for Kirkland Lake who held intermission leads of 1-0 and 3-2.

Andrew Bertrand, Samuel Wilbur, with the game-winner, along with Alex Hulford also connected for the Miners while Kenny Fitzgerald turned aside 24 of the 26 shots he faced to earn the win.

Nicolas Tassone and Anthony Miller scored for Sault Ste. Marie.

Brian Kment saw 30 pucks fired his way in the setback as the Thunderbirds lost in regulation play for just the first time since back on Sept. 27, having gone an impressive 13-1-0-1 in 15 outings in that span.
