TIMMINS, Ont. – An Austin Whelan goal midway through the third period proved to the game-winner as the visiting Cochrane Crunch went on to slip past the Timmins Rock 3-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Tuesday evening in front of 628 fans at McIntyre Arena.
Cochrane kicked off the scoring 16:24 into the contest as Austin Stauffer stuffed in his 24th tally of the season to put the visitors in front.
Timmins replied with the equalizer late in the second stanza with Jordan Picard and Josh Anderson combining to set-up Derek Sequin at 17:58 of the frame to knot the affair at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Heading in to the third, it remained tied until midway through the period as Whelan picked up the difference maker which proved to be his initial game-winning marker of the campaign.
Stauffer added some insurance, via the power play, with 3:37 to go as he picked up his second of the night and league-leading 25th goal of the year to round out the scoring.
Crunch netminder Shayne Battler made 20 stops to record the victory helping Cochrane improve to 20-10-2-1 overall.
Rock starter Eric Jackson was busier, handling 33 of the 36 shots he saw on the night in defeat for Timmins, who fell to 11-19-1-2 on the season.
