Crunch trio paces Cochrane past Powassan

COCHRANE – The Cochrane Crunch two goals apiece from Cody Gratton, Jason Berube and Dustin Cordeiro as they disposed of the Powassan Voodoos 7-2 Friday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Fresh off being named the NOJHL’s Gongshow Gear player of the month for September earlier in the day, Cochrane’s Gratton was quick to strike in this one as he buried his league-leading 10th tally of the season just 26 seconds after the opening face-off.

Berube made it 2-0 for the Crunch midway through the opening session only to see Brett Lepisto put Powassan on the board at 14:21.

Berube’s second of the stanza in the late going restored the Cochrane cushion to two heading into the middle session.

A sizzling shorthanded effort by Gratton resulted in his second of the evening and 11th of the campaign at 6:41.

Special teams allowed the Voodoos to get back into it at 15:25 thanks to a Kyle Moore man advantage marker to bring the visitors back to within two.

Tallies 17 seconds apart by Cordeiro early in the third sent the home side on their way as they took control.

Cochrane added one final tally by Aviv Milner at 7:25 to finalize the night’s scoring.

Shots on goal were 43-35 in favour of the Crunch with Troy Paquette securing the win.

Jack Ondrovic allowed six against on 31 shots and suffered the loss while Ben Auger stopped 15 of 16 in nearly 16 minutes of relief.
