SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Getting a milestone marker from Lucas Signoretti, the Greater Sudbury Cubs skated to their 12th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Saturday as they downed the Soo Eagles 3-1 at Pullar Stadium.
The NOJHL-leading Cubs started the scoring nine minutes into the proceedings as Samuel Assinewai picked off a clearing attempt on the right side and wired a shot past Eagles’ starter Mason Burkes.
Greater Sudbury then extended their lead 4:04 into the second period when Cameron Shanks sent a backhand to the net that managed to get through Burkes and in.
They then saw Lucas Signoretti notch his 100th NOJHL goal to make it 3-0 as he cruised into the Sault Ste. Marie zone on a power play and worked his way to the slot where he sent a sizzler into the back of the net.
The last NOJHLer to reach the century mark in tallies was former Cubs’ standout Oliver Smith, who achieved the feat back on March 15 of last season in a triumph over French River.
Eventually solving Greater Sudbury goaltender Matthew Vahramian, the Soo’s Cooper Fredericks took a pass from Tyler Fortson into the right circle and roofed it, high blocker side, during a man advantage with 12 and a half minutes to play.
The tally also saw Fredericks extend a point streak to a seven-game heater.
Getting their goalie out for an extra skater in the final minutes, the Eagles looked to get closer, but Vahramian, who was solid throughout, and his teammates shut the door defensively to continue their winning ways.
The outcome helps the Cubs move to 13-1-1-1 on the campaign, and in defeat, the Eagles drop to 8-5-0-1.
