SUDBURY, Ont. – The two-time defending Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Greater Sudbury Cubs announced Tuesday that defenceman Michael MacLean has committed to attend the University of Guelph as well as continue his hockey career with the Gryphons’ men’s program in the fall.

MacLean, a 20-year-old Manotick, Ont., product, saw action in 15 games with the Cubs after being picked up in early January at the Canadian Junior Hockey League roster deadline, registering nine points, on four goals, including a game-winner, and five assists.

The towering six-foot-five-inch blueliner also chipped in with eight points in Greater Sudbury’s run to the NOJHL title, on a trio of tallies and five helpers. He also chipped in with an assist on five outings for the Cubs at the Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Hortons, in Calgary.

“After joining us at the trade deadline, Michael immediately made a positive impact, both on the ice, and in the dressing room,” stated Cubs’ head coach Darryl Moxam.

The NOJHL coach of the year went on to add: “He was an integral part to the success of our program this past season and we’re incredibly proud that he gets to continue his development with the Gryphons, and in the classroom at the University of Guelph.”

Prior to joining Greater Sudbury, MacLean spent parts of two seasons in the NOJHL with the Powassan Voodoos, suiting up in 42 match-ups where he scored five times and helped set-up a dozen others.

Members of U SPORTS, the Guelph Gryphons compete in the 10-school West Conference of Ontario University Athletics.
