Espanola dumps Sudbury 8-3

SUDBURY – The Espanola Rivermen scored six unanswered second period goals to defeat the Sudbury Nickel Barons 8-3 Wednesday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at McClelland Arena.

Each side tallied twice in the opening period with Espanola’s Corbin Bean and Ryan Attwood sandwiching around Sudbury markers by Brody Brunet and Jimmy Roy.

After the Nickel Barons took a 3-2 lead 17 seasons into the middle session courtesy of Giovanni Foschia the Rivermen erupted for six straight, including four on the power play, to put it away.

J.T. Walters tied things up with the man advantage at 4:20 to level the proceedings Robert Smythe notched the eventual game-winner two and a half minutes later.

Additional power play efforts by Blake Peavey and Connor Gilmartin 80 seconds apart made it 6-3 Espanola before Cray Roberge tacked on a pair to conclude the offensive outburst.

Brandon Janke dished out three assists for the winners

Affiliate Kevin Labelle made 27 stops to record the victory for the Rivermen and Michael Muzyka started for Sudbury suffered the loss allowing five against on 25 attempts.

Andrew Lefebvre then gave up the final three against for the Nickel Barons on 16 shots in just under 30 minutes of relief.
