Foschia scores 3 as Nickel Barons edge Bobcats in OT
SUDBURY – Giovanni Foschia’s third goal of the game 1:59 of overtime was the difference as the Sudbury Nickel Barons defeated the Elliot Lake Bobcats 3-2 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.
After a scoreless opening period Foschia put the Nickel Barons on the board 40 seconds into the second stanza as he finished off the work of Jimmy Roy and Martin Jolicouer, who drew assists on the play.
Elliot Lake would level the proceedings six minutes later as Jason Berube notched his second in as may outings since joining the Bobcats.
Special teams allowed Sudbury to go back on top midway through the third as Foschia notched number two on the night via the power play.
An Aviv Milner man advantage marker with 7:44 remaining in regulation forced extra time as he scored his 12th of the campaign.
That set the stage for Foschia to complete his hat-trick and give the Nickel Barons the much-need victory.
The big night for the Sudbury forward was the first three-goal game in the NOJHL on an evening he also set a new career season high in tallies with 13.
Michael Muzyka made 40 stops in the Sudbury net to register the win helping his side improve to 9-19-0-5 on the campaign.
Etienne Roy saw 37 shots fired his way as he helped his squad earn a point in the OT setback as they fell to 15-12-0-4 overall.
NOJHL action continues Friday with a trio of 7:30 p.m. starts with North Bay visiting Espanola, Blind River at Sault Ste. Marie and Elliot Lake at home to Kirkland Lake.
