French River earns 1st win with 5-4 decision over Kirkland Lake

SUDBURY, Ont. – The French River Rapids picked an opportune time to earn their first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory of the season as they defeated the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-4 in Game 2 of the NOJHL Showcase Tuesday at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Kirkland Lake used the power play to notch the lone tally of the opening frame when Austin Anselmo scored on the power play at 4:18.

Blake Cudmore and Stavors Soilis supplied the markers for the Gold Miners in the session.

Heading into the third Caleb Rich made it 4-3 Rapids thanks to a man advantage effort at 6:46 and then added the eventual game-winner with 4:22 to go.

Kirkland Lake pulled starter Jeff Veitch in favour of an extra attacker and got one back with 54 seconds left from Alex Storjohann, but that’s as close as the they would get as French River held on for their initial triumph of the campaign.
