Gold Miners prevail over Gaillards in extra time

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A frenzied finish saw the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners pull out a dramatic 5-4 decision in overtime over the Abitibi-Temiscaming Gaillards from Quebec Thursday evening at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake also opened the scoring, a couple of minutes into the contest, as the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League side picked up an early marker from Kyler Campbell.

The visitors tied it at 14:42 off the stick of Remy Fortier, only to see the Gold Miners regain the lead thanks to A.J. Campbell.

Following a scoreless second stanza, the teams came out firing in the third by connecting for five tallies before the session was half way done.

Max Newnam made it 3-1 for the home side 54 seconds in, only to see the Gaillards strikes three times in rapid succession to go up 4-3 off markers from Hugo Mezentzeff, Pierre Binet and Jordan Rancourt, who notched a power play goal.

Undaunted, Kirkland Lake came back to level the proceedings as Caleb Thompson tied it at 7:23.

The Gold Miners’ then won early in OT as Newnam notched his second of the night to help his side secure the victory.

Ryan McNair made 20 saves in picking up the win for Kirkland Lake while Geremy Giasson faced 29 attempts in defeat for his club.
