Lumberjacks take down Gold Miners

HEARST, Ont. – The Hearst Lumberjacks picked up goals from four different skaters in a well-balanced attack that helped them defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division affair Tuesday night in front of 621 fans at Claude Larose Arena.

Going to the power play midway through the first period helped Hearst open the scoring as Jake Desando notched his 10th tally of the season.

Moving on to the middle session, the Lumberjacks went on an 11-minute run that saw them strike three times to go up by four.

Daniel Fisher started the outburst 3:07 into the stanza before Blaise Arkle and George Young connected 55 seconds apart later in the frame to extend the cushion that also resulted in the Gold Miners replacing their starting goaltender Dawson Rodin in favour of backup Gregory Brassard.

On a two-man advantage to commence the third, Kirkland Lake capitalized quickly with Sam Ellwood finishing off a Gregory Trudeau-Paquet feed with the latter now having points in five consecutive outings as well as in nine of 10.

Hearst tightened up defensively from there however as the remainder of the matchup was scoreless.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Lumberjacks by a 31-23 count with Nicholas Tallarico picking up the win.

Rodin suffered the loss allowing four against on 21 attempts and Brassard handled all 10 he saw in over 25 minutes of relief.

With the result, Hearst moves back to .500 in league play at 10-10-2-1 while Kirkland Lake slipped to 16-6-0-0 overall.
