NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced today that a trio of forwards in Cody Gratton (Cochrane Crunch), Nicolas Tassone (Soo Thunderbirds) and Steven Babin (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Jan. 11.

CODY GRATTON, (F) – COCHRANE CRUNCH – The NOJHL’s leading goal and point producer continued his impressive offensive ways for the Crunch last week helping lead them to two victories in as many starts.

The 20-year-old Sudbury product began by scoring twice, including the game-winner in double overtime, as Cochrane slipped past Powassan 7-6.

One night later Gratton notched the difference maker once again as he fired home his league-leading eighth game-winner of the season in a 4-2 triumph vs. Mattawa.

Riding an active six-game point streak, Gratton leads the NOJHL in goals (42), points (71), shorthanded tallies (10) as well as the eight winners.

NICOLAS TASSONE, (F) – SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Taking to the ice twice during the week that was, the 20-year-old Sault Ste. Marie produced back-to-back multi-point night to help lift the Thunderbirds to two triumphs.

Friday evening he scored once and assisted on another as the T-Birds topped Sudbury 6-2.

Saturday night he tacked on two more tallies as the Soo doubled up Abitibi 6-3.

Tassone currently leads the Thunderbirds in offensive production with 52 points, which leaves him fifth overall in the league. He also has had 17 multi-point games during the 2014-15 campaign.

His 23 tallies and 29 helpers also top the club and rank him in the top 10 in the NOJHL.

STEVEN BABIN, (F) – KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Babin was instrumental in helping Kirkland Lake pick up six of a possible seven points in three outings last week.

Included in the 20-year-old Val-d’Or, Que., native’s efforts was a hat trick and one assist night in a victory over Abitibi last Tuesday.

He also scored once and doled out a couple of helpers in a win over Powassan Friday.

Babin enters play this week second in NOJHL scoring with 64 points and also leads all skaters in the league in assists with 44.
