Pair of Lumberjacks to play U.S. college hockey

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Hearst Lumberjacks have announced their first pair of players who have committed to furthering their education, while continuing their on-ice careers in the U.S. college hockey ranks.

Forwards Liam Boswell and Aiden Kalin will be off to Nichols College (NCAA D-III) and Niagara University (ACHA D-I) respectively.

A stellar performer in the NOJHL throughout his five years in the league, Boswell skated in 200 career contests overall with both Hearst and the former Cochrane Crunch franchise.

In all, the 20-year-old Oakville, Ont., product accumulated 173 points, notching 63 goals and dishing out 110 assists.

Through his time in the NOJHL, dating back to 2020, Boswell had the sixth-most points among league skaters and was one of five players to see action in 200, or more, contests.

The Nichols College Bison are one of eight schools that are members of the Conference of New England.

As for Kalin, he too put up solid numbers for the Lumberjacks.

In two campaigns with Hearst, the 20-year-old from Calgary, Alta., was nicely over a point-per-game clip with 117 in 101 outings.

This included scoring 49 times and helping set-up 68 others.

Kalin also notched 15 power play tallies with the Lumberjacks and had seven game-winning markers.

In 2024-25, he established personal single-season bests in goals, assists and points with 25, 37 and 62 respectively, finishing eighth in NOJHL offensive production.

Kalin was third in team scoring in each of his two seasons with the club.

Skating in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the Niagara Purple Eagles are in the Division I conference of the ACHA.
