Powassan powers past Mattawa for 1st NOJHL win

POWASSAN – Kyle Moore tallied twice and assisted on the game-winning goal to help propel the Powassan Voodoos to their first-ever victory, a 6-2 triumph in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Monday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Moore got the Voodoos in flight early in the opening period by notching his first two markers of the season to put the home side up by a pair before the contest was 10 minutes old.

He then helped set-up Jeremy St. Pierre with the eventual difference maker before the frame was complete to extend the lead to 3-0.

Mattawa got on the board late in the middle stanza when Jimmy Philbin connected with 49 seconds remaining in the period.

The Voodoos then ran their lead to 5-1 in the third getting even strength efforts from Aaron Sullivan and Steve Harland.

Kyle Huhn added a power play goal for the Blackhawks at 15:44 before Nathanial McLeod wrapped up the night’s scoring for Powassan with a late extra man tally.

St. Pierre and Bo Peltier each chipped in with two assists for the victorious side while Christian Sgroi had a couple helpers for the Hawks.

Shots on goal favoured the Voodoos 56-45 with Jack Ondrovic picking up his first NOJHL win and Josh Horner suffering the loss.

Next up on the league slate has the Sudbury Nickel Barons playing host to the Blind River Beavers in a 7:30 p.m. start Wednesday at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.
