ESPANOLA, Ont. – Mitch Wilkie’s first NOJHL goal, coming 3:55 into overtime, propelled the Powassan Voodoos to a 3-2 decision over the Espanola Paper Kings in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League competition Friday at the Regional Recreation Complex.
The Voodoos also started strong, snagging a 2-0 lead after one period of play on tallies from Nathan MacDonald and Conor O’Brien.
MacDonald got his marker at 9:45 when he beat Paper Kings netminder Andrew Gaulton with a nice deflection off an Alex Little attempt from the left point.
As for O’Brien’s tally, he was credited with getting a piece of defenceman Carson Ricci’s shot from the right-side boards at 12:53.
Battling back in the final half of the second stanza, Espanola notched a couple of goals in their own to tie at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Michael Leach got the Paper Kings on the board at 11:02 then saw Atley Gringorten score for the fifth time in three games to level the proceedings.
After a scoreless third period, the teams headed to extra time to determine a winner and saw Powassan prevail thanks to Wilkie’s decider.
Kannon Flagoelle earned the victory in net for the Voodoos while Gaulton’s efforts helped Espanola pick up a point in defeat.
