Powassan skates past Rayside-Balfour

POWASSAN, Ont. – Andy Baker had a pair of first period goals, one of which was the game-winner, to help lead the Powassan Voodoos to a 5-1 victory over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Baker started his night by striking shorthanded five and a half minutes into the contest to put the Voodoos in flight.

He then notched his second of the stanza and team-leading 14th overall at 14:33 to give the home side a 2-0 lead after one period of play.

Powassan kept coming and tacked on a trio of tallies in the middle stanza to go up by five after 40 minutes.

Tyson Gilmour’s fourth, during a man advantage opportunity, early in the frame started things off before Gary Mantz and Parker Bowman supplied even strength efforts before the session was 10 minutes old.

Rayside-Balfour dashed Nate McDonald’s shutout bid with a power play at 11:41 of the third to round out the scoring.

Eric Nagy, Tyr Lindeman and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe all chipped in with two assists apiece to aid the Voodoos offensive cause.

Nate McDonald had a solid night in net for Powassan stopping 26 of the 27 shots fired his win in picking up the win.

Owen Johansson faced 42 attempts in defeat for the Canadians.
