CHELMSFORD – The Rayside-Balfour Canadians of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Friday that free agent defenceman Ryan Mooney has signed with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 17-year-old blueliner departs the Canadians after sitting in third in offensive production among NOJHL defencemen with 23 points in 21 games on six goals and 17 assists.

In 71 career NOJHL contests he scored 13 times and set-up 44 more for 57 points.

Almost half of his markers came on the power play as he notched six during man advantage opportunities.

Mooney was also a member of Team NOJHL at each of the past two at the Eastern Canada Cup Challenge events.

He was also earlier chosen to attend the upcoming Canada East Selection Camp in Toronto, but will now forgo that to join Moncton.

“We are really excited to have a player as skilled as Ryan join our back end; and a rare right shot defenceman. Ryan is only 17 and we will look to him for years to come as our power play QB, we would like to welcome him to the Moncton Wildcats,” stated Director of Hockey Operations, Roger Shannon.

Mooney is expected to make his QMJHL debut Saturday evening as Moncton takes on the Victoriaville Tigres.
