Saginaw shines in return as Powassan tops French River

FRENCH RIVER – Making his mark in his return to the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, Powassan Voodoos forward Ryan Saginaw racked up multiple points as part of an 8-1 victory over the French River Rapids Friday night at Noelville Arena.

Taking early control, the visiting Voodoos connected twice before the first period was 10 minutes in.

Their initial effort came at 4:45 as Caden Dubreuil took a crisp headman pass from recently re-acquired Saginaw and went in alone on Rapids’ starter Gavin Zuccato and buried his chance.

Saginaw then found Caleb Dawson in the slot who converted on a power play.

A quick goaltending change by French River saw Liam McGilp enter I relief.

Following an injury delay, Saginaw supplied his third assist of the period as his play put to the crease was steered in by Dubreuil.

Banging in another moments later, Owen Smith whipped one in from between the circles that saw Zuccato re-enter the game.

Moving to the second period, some early Powassan pressure resulted in Aidan Duchesne notching his 10th of the campaign before Tyler Brunet finished off a chance after being set-up down-low by Cameron Lockhart, who collected his first NOJHL point with the assist.

After Tucker Newton put one past Voodoos’ goalkeeper Logan Coates for his initial NOJHL tally off a two-on-one with Daniel Petrov to put French River on the board, Alexandre Saulnier countered for the guests to run a point streak to seven as he took a Dawson feed and pumped it upstairs.

Finishing it off in the third, Saginaw capped off the scoring by swatting in a cross-crease feed from Dawson.
