SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The red-hot Powassan Voodoos continue to soar as they skated to their 21st consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Friday as they defeated the Soo Thunderbirds 4-1 in an intense affair held at John Rhodes Community Centre.
A physical first period saw Powassan collect the lone tally of the session early on as Ryan Mills notched his seventh of the season at 2:11.
The Voodoos then extended their cushion near the nine-minute mark of the middle stanza off the stick of Dylan Gajewski.
Picking up one of the assists on the play was Gregory Trudeau-Paquet, who bumped up a consecutive game point streak to eight in succession.
Not done there, the league-leaders continued to connect, seeing Tomas Yachmenev and Eric Mondoux both find the back of the net as Powassan took a four-goal lead after 40 minutes.
The Thunderbirds finally solved Voodoos starter Owen Say with four and a half minutes remaining as Nick Smith scored on the power play in what proved to be the night’s final tally.
The No. 1-ranked club in the entire Canadian Junior Hockey League saw their netminder Say win his 16th straight NOJHL appearance while making 28 saves and seeing his side improve to 23-1 overall.
Dakota Meyer started for the Soo and suffered the loss, seeing 41 attempts fired his way in defeat as they fell to 14-11-1-2 on the campaign.
