Thunderbirds rally to win 10th straight in triumph over Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The surging Soo Thunderbirds rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the rival Soo Eagles 5-3 Friday at Pullar Stadium to win their 10th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest.

It was the Eagles who started strong going up a pair early on goals from Nate Harris and Brendan Schultz.

The Thunderbirds got one back before the first period was finished thanks to Zach Senecal’s 30th tally of the season.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Senecal added his second of the night to tie it early in the third during a man advantage opportunity.

The T-Birds then came back with one more at even strength 36 seconds after that off the stick of Kaidan McDonald.

The goals kept coming with Roman Gaudet drawing the Eagles level at 3:59.

Continuing to click offensively, the Thunderbirds picked up the eventual game-winner with 6:33 remaining in regulation as Alec Allen scored on the power play.

They then iced in with a late empty netter off the stick of their captain Matthew Caruso who notched his 28th of 2016-17 to round out the scoring.

Austin Kozluk picked up a pair of assists to extend a point streak to 10 in succession. Greg Smith also had two helpers for the T-Birds.

Dougie Newhouse made 34 saves to record the win while Jack Deines faced 43 shots in defeat for the Eagles.
