Timmins wins again in OT with decision over Iroquois Falls

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Wayne Mathieu’s 20th goal of the season, which came with 20 seconds left in the first overtime helped the Timmins Rock edge the Iroquois Falls Eskis 5-4 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.

A night after defeating Blind River in double OT Friday on a last-second marker from Bain Cunningham, it was Mathieu who opened the scoring for Timmins Saturday.

The Eskis came back in the next period to tie it then go in front seven seconds later on tallies courtesy of Ryan Forsyth and Samuel Vigneux.

After Jordan Rendle tied it for the Rock at 13:40, Alex Mitsionis put Iroquois Falls back in front with 61 seconds left in the session.

The back and forth affair saw the visitors level the proceedings on Dean Kiriacou’s third of the season at 12:40 only to see the Eskis’ Dillan Bruce notch his 23rd to put the home side back in front with 4:12 remaining.

Timmins battled back to force extra time at 17:32 as Cory Spague picked up his 19th for the Rock.

Then with the first OT nearing an end, it was Mathieu who won it for Timmins with his second of the game and 20th overall to make it a final.

Rendle along with Josh Dejulio of Iroquois Falls had two assists each for their respective teams.

Jeff Veitch made 33 saves to record the win for the rock while Artem Bortovskiy had 43 stops to help his club earn a point in defeat.
