IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Supplying five first period goals, the Powassan Voodoos went on to fly past the Iroquois Falls Storm 9-2 Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee at Jus Jordan Arena.
Powassan opened the scoring moments after a power play, they were on, had expired as Mathieu MacMillan lifted in a loose puck off a Carson Ricci point shot over the pad of a downed Connor Dunham-Fox in the Iroquois Falls net.
Coming right back the Voodoos added another just over a minute later after Chase Thompson had just jumped on the ice on a line change then darted to the slot where he pumped in a nice between the legs back pass from MacMillan, who was situated behind the goal line.
Continuing to click offensively, the visitors scored again at 11:20, thanks to Darby McCarthy beating Dunham-Fox with a quick shot from the left side.
A Storm man advantage helped them get one back a couple of shifts later as Owen Cassidy fired a shot from the point right off the draw and saw it bounce off a Powassan defender, then tucked in by Max Jugnauth, by goalkeeper Michael McIvor, who was making his NOJHL debut.
Countering quickly, the Voodoos pumped in two more before the end of period, beginning with Rhys Smetham redirecting a shot from up top by defenceman Mason Rotundo, who neatly backpedalled to the middle of the ice before letting his attempt go.
That resulted in an Iroquois Falls goaltending change with Connor Hatfield taking over from there.
However, Reyth Smith greeted him with his seventh of the season after being left alone in front, which left him with plenty of time to score.
In the middle frame, it was more from the guests as they tacked on four more to go up in a big way after 40 minutes.
The marksmen in the session were Owen Smetham, Ryan Patrick, MacMillan and Caden Dubreuil.
In the third, the Storm’s Lucas Peever won a race down the ice for the puck and hammered his chance past McIvor from the left face off dot, in what proved to be the day’s final goal.
The win sees the Voodoos move to 11-4-0-1 overall while the Storm dropped to 5-12-0-0.
