GALLERY: Canadians win 1-0 in shootout in goaltenders battle with Thunderbirds

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – Giordano Biondi had the only goal of the game, which came in the shootout, and Sebastien Plamondon made 29 stops in all as the Rayside-Balfour Canadians picked up their second straight shutout, a narrow 1-0 triumph over the Soo Thunderbirds, in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday evening at Chelmsford Arena.

It was a goaltender’s battle throughout with both Plamondon and the Thunderbirds’ William Anderson keeping opposing shooters at bay.

Neither side were able to score in each of the three periods as well as in the five-minute overtime to send it to the shootout to finalize things.

There the only tally came off the stick of Biondi as he fired one past Anderson on the Canadians second attempt.

Plamondon was flawless throughout in picking up his second shutout of the season.

As for Anderson, he too gets credit for his initial shutout in the NOJHL, while suffering the narrow shootout setback while making 44 saves along the way.

Rayside-Balfour has now not allowed a goal against in regulation or overtime in the past 141 minutes and 26 seconds of game action.
