GALLERY: Fredericks hat trick paces Eagles past Vikings

MASSEY, Ont. – The Soo Eagles pounded five goals in the second period on the way to a convincing 9-2 win over the Elliot Lake Vikings Tuesday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Massey & District Arena.

Cooper Fredericks paced the Eagles offence with three goals, while Nolan Hendry and Lane Janssen supplied two-goal efforts in the one-sided affair.

Vikings netminder Braydon Garnhart made multiple big stops. despite the high score in the contest as he was named the game’s second star.

Early in the first, the Eagles moved the puck around before Lane Janssen whistled a high shot over the shoulder of Garnhart at 5:11 to make it 1-0 Eagles.

A few minutes later, it’s Janssen creating a turnover and Cooper Fredericks picked up the loose puck to the left of Garnhart as he made a nice net drive move to beat the Vikings goalie and make it 2-0 Eagles.

The Vikings got on the board after Aaron Shanks tipped a Kaden Wicklander shot by Eagles goalie Anthony Zolezzi which made it 2-1 at 16:47.

But just 20 seconds later, the Eagles Jack Paweski created a turnover behind the Vikings net and fed Nolan Hendry with a pass in the slot and he beat Garnhart for his 17th of the season at 17:07.

Early in the second, on an Eagles power play Hendry took a nice pass in the slot from Benjamin Pouliot and put it by Garnhart which made it 4-1 Eagles.

The Eagles continued to pour on the pressure, after Garnhart made a couple of great stops, Cooper Fredericks was able to bang home a rebound which made it 5-1 at 8:14.

Then, right off the faceoff at centre ice, the Eagles raced back down into the Vikings end and Tyler Fortsom found Benjamin Pouliot who ripped a shot by Garnhart at 8:30 for the 6-1 lead.

Late in the period, Fredericks and Gabriel Fisher scored goals just over 30 seconds apart just before the 18-minute mark which made it 8-1 Eagles after 40 minutes.

Early in the third Janssen finished off a nice backdoor feed for his 3rd only 1:09 which increased the lead to 9-1.

The Vikings added a late goal on a power play as rookie Anthony Bertrand put home a rebound off a Max Ciesielski point shot which made it 9-2.

With the win the Eagles improve to 30-19-1-2 on the season while the Vikings fall to 5-38-1-4.
