Gold Miners blank Eskimos 6-0

KIRKLAND LAKE – Kyle Bishop’s first period power play goal turned out to be the only the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners would require Sunday evening as they blanked the visiting Abitibi Eskimos 6-0 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The man advantage effort by Bishop came at the 16:21 mark of the opening stanza as he finished off the work of captain Dan Morin and Luke Meade.

Kirkland Lake would then take control in the middle session as they struck for three tallies in span of two minutes and 36 seconds.

After Mathieu Lecompte connected on the power play at 10:25, Tanner Lafrance found the back of the net at even strength 52 seconds later.

Steven Babin then capped off the offensive outburst at 13:01 with his team-leading 50th point of the season.

Austin Rust then scored twice in the third to round things out, including Babin assisting on the final goal of the night to increase his point total to 51.

Jeremy Pominville turned aside all 20 shots he faced to register the shutout for the Gold Miners, who fired 31 attempts on Eskimos netminder Brody Wagner.

League play continues Monday as the North Bay Trappers host the Sudbury Nickel Barons in a 7 p.m. start at West Ferris Arena.
