Kirkland Lake swamps French River
NOELVILLE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners got four goals from Gunnar Wegleitner as well as four assists apiece from Stavros Soilis, Matthew Brassard and Alex Storjohann to help them swamp the French River Rapids 12-1 Saturday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Noelville Arena.
French River did get off to a solid start in the contest, notching the night’s opening tally 61 seconds in on Christian Gaudreau’s ninth of the season.
The Gold Miners countered with a pair of man advantage markers before the first period was complete as Wegleitner and Tyler Fyfe connected on the power play as the visitors took a 2-1 cushion into the middle stanza.
Kirkland Lake broke the game open in that second session as they struck five times to go up six after 40 minutes.
Marshal Nikitin started the offensive outburst at 6:02 while Kevin Ford added his 27th of the campaign at 10:48.
Nikitin added another 20 seconds later before Fyfe and Wegleitner supplied efforts moments apart to make it 7-1.
The Gold Miners tacked on five more in the third to finish off the one-sided decision.
Wegleitner had two to reach four goals on the night while Nikitin had another to finish off a hat trick with Liam Watson and William Mizuik picking up singles.
Seven different Kirkland Lake skaters had three or more points on the night.
Allan Menary made 31 saves to pick up the win for the Gold Miners.
Evan Peltier started for the Rapids and played the first two periods while facing 42 saves.
Nicholas Larocque was peppered with 22 shots in third period relief for French River.
