SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Stephen Minichiello of the Cochrane Crunch and Caleb Serre of the Blind River Beavers, along with Powassan Voodoos goaltender Owen Say have been named its initial Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the 2019-20 season, that features the period ending Sept. 8.
STEPHEN MINICHIELLO, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – In a pair of outings for Cochrane to open the campaign, the 20-year-old from Toronto notched a league-best five goals and added an assist as the Crunch took a pair of contests from French River.
In the season opener he notched his first four NOJHL markers and set-up another while tacking on another goal in Game No. 2.
Two of Minichiello’s tallies were the game-winners, including one in overtime, for his side in the triumphs over the Rapids.
OWEN SAY, (G) POWASSAN VOODOOS – The Powassan netminder put in a pair of solid efforts for his club as he helped backstop the Voodoos to a couple of victories over Rayside-Balfour.
In all, the 18-year-old from London, Ont., allowed just three pucks to get past him in two starts while making his league debut.
Say posted a 1.50 goals-against average for the week and backed that up with a .949 save percentage.
CALEB SERRE, (F) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – Serre continues to be a key cog in the success that the Beavers have achieved the past number of seasons.
Skating for his hometown Blind River squad, he produced seven points, on three goals and four assists, in two games over the weekend as the Beavers won in Espanola, in overtime, and followed that up with a home victory over Elliot Lake.
Serre enters Week No. 2 of league play tied for top spot in offensive production.
Entering his fourth year in the NOJHL, the 20-year-old veteran forward has played at over a point-per-game pace with Blind River, accumulating 73 markers and 90 helpers in 157 contests.
