Picard-Fiset scores game-winner as Gold Miners edge Trappers

NORTH BAY – A Jeremy Picard-Fiset tally midway through the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners edged the North Bay Trappers 3-2 Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at West Ferris Arena.

After Kirkland Lake’s Jonathon Langford gave the visitors a quick lead by striking 13 seconds after the opening face-off, North Bay responded on efforts by Duane Wainman and Zach Shankar to go up after one period of play.

Austin Rust pulled the Gold Miners level connecting 1:22 into the second stanza on what would be the only marker of the middle session.

Picard-Fiset then beat North Bay netminder Evan Cormier with the winner with 10:18 remaining.

Samuel Wilbur assisted on all three Kirkland Lake goals while Langford had a pair of helpers for a three-point night.

Kenny Fitzgerald made 22 stops to register the victory for the Gold Miners who fired 32 pucks on Cormier, who suffered the loss.

The win was Kirkland Lake’s sixth in a row as they improved to 33-6-0-3 on the season with North Bay slipping to 13-25-0-5.

NOJHL play resumes Wednesday on two fronts as Elliot Lake entertains Espanola while Sudbury hosts Sault Ste. Marie as the league-leading Thunderbirds go in search of their 20th win in a row.
