Powassan wins 24th straight with 4-3 decision over Cochrane

COCHRANE, Ont. – The red-hot Powassan Voodoos got a goal and an assist from Andy Baker to help them earn their 24th straight Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Friday as they defeated the Cochrane Crunch 4-3 at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Tyson Gilmour put the Voodoos in front 14:16 into the first period only to see Cochrane’s Colin Boudreau counter just 23 seconds later to knot the affair at 1-1 after one.

Baker’s league-leading 34th tally of the season put the visitors back in front near the four-minute mark of the middle stanza while teammate Brett Hahkala’s 10th put Powassan up by a pair at 14:55.

The Crunch did get one back late in the frame thanks to a Nicolas Flanders effort with 65 seconds left.

The Voodoos’ Dylan D’Agostino made it 4-1 at 14:44 of the third before Austin Stauffer managed to get one back late for Cochrane before time expired and Powassan ran their impressive streak to 24 in succession.

Nate McDonald made 36 stops to post the decision for the Voodoos as he won his 15th straight appearance while also reaching the 20-win plateau on the season.

Recently acquired netminder Taylor Unruh made 32 stops in first game as a member of the Crunch.
