SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Scoring three times on the power play was part of a five-goal, first period, barrage that helped propel the Soo Eagles to an 8-2 victory over the Iroquois Falls Storm Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Pullar Stadium.
Starting strong, Sault Ste. Marie bagged a couple of markers before the match-up was nine minutes in.
Theodore Schubert notched the initial Eagles tally as he spun in the slot and pumped a shot into the top left corner at 6:20.
The Soo then clicked on a man advantage that saw Lucas Caulfield beat Storm starter Justin Sullivan by jamming in a rebound off a Tyler Fortson attempt from up top.
Anden Marceau then stuffed in another for the Soo at 13:49 to extend the home side’s edge.
Adding a fourth, Alex Povorozniouk scored on a five-on-three for the Eagles to give him goals in back-to-back games.
That also resulted in a netminding change for Iroquois Falls, with Connor Hatfield coming in.
A Storm shorthanded marker saw Remi Gendron tip in an Andre Cho chance to get the guests on the board.
However, the Soo notched another while up a pair of skaters once again as Jack Ohlund redirected a Landon Stevens attempt.
In the second period, Landon Trethewey banked one in late into a power play for Iroquois Falls to get one back.
The Eagles countered moments later though with Coulson Bell darting in and making a nifty move in beating Hatfield.
Going up by five, Cooper Fredericks struck shorthanded for the Soo late in the frame as he wheeled into Storm territory and took a play left-to-right before depositing his chance at 18:42.
Moving to the final frame, Stevens knocked in a rebound off a Luke Russell left point attempt to add to the home side’s cushion and round out the scoring.
With the outcome, the Eagles improve to 9-6-0-1 and in defeat the Storm slip to 6-12-0-0.
