IROQUOIS FALLS, ON – An Andrew Cho power play marker late in the third period was the difference as the Storm edged the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-2 at the Jus Jordan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Cho scored off a rebound at 15:50 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and net the game winner.
Patrice Lafontaine increased his goal-scoring streak to five games as he opened the scoring for the Storm at 4:49 of the first period.
Lafontaine found a loose puck on a scramble in front of the Gold Miners goalie Trent Boryszczuk for the lone goal of the opening stanza.
The Gold Miners evened things up when Luca Maiuri slipped a shot that just squeezed under Brodie Haylock to make it 1-1 at 4:56 of the second on a power play.
The Gold Miners took the lead on a turnover at their blueline as Jamie Collins stole the puck and sent Evan Norris all alone and he made no mistake for a 2-1 lead at 6:32.
The Storm responded after some good pressure in the Gold Miners zone, Owen Cassidy ripped a shot through traffic which made it 2-2.
After Cho’s tally, Tyler Corbett provided an insurance marker, his 6th, into an empty net in the final 30 seconds for the 4-2 Storm win.
The Storm (15-33-0-2) win moved them 8 points up on the Gold Miners (9-34-4-2) for fourth spot in the NOJHL East.
