Strong start sends Iroquois Falls over Cochrane

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Iroquois Falls Eskis stormed out to a 4-0 lead after one period of play and never trailed as they surprised the Cochrane Crunch 6-3 Saturday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Jus Jordan Arena.

It was scoreless through the first half of the opening frame before the Eskis erupted for four markers in a span of six minutes and 28 seconds much to the delight of 461 fans on hand.

Jacob Erwin opened things up offensively for Iroquois Falls at 10:35 while Blake Holowaty added to that with a power play effort at 13:39.

On a two-man advantage, the Eskis made it 3-0 on Erwin’s second of the stanza with Shadow Reuben collecting his sixth of the season, via the power play once again, at 17:03.

Cochrane replaced starter Allan Menary after that and went with Brett Young the rest of the way.

Iroquois Falls added a fourth extra man marker midway through the contest courtesy of David Osborne before John Stevenson got one back for the Crunch, on the power play, at 13:52 of the second.

Hunter Atchison made it 5-2 as he brought the visitors closer before the session was complete.

Atchison was at it again early in the third and he supplied his league-leading 37 goal of the campaign to make it interesting.

However Eskis netminder Joe Sheppard held the fort from there before Osborne iced it with an empty netter in the final seconds to secure the victory.

Holowaty and Stuart Harley dished out two assists apiece for Iroquois Falls in the victory.

Sheppard was bombarded with 75 shots in registering the win for the Eskis.

Menary suffered the loss for Cochrane allowing four against on 21 attempts while young stopped 24 of 25 in relief.
