Voodoos roll over Eskis
IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos capped off a three-game road swing by defeating the Iroquois Falls Eskis 10-3 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee at Jus Jordan Arena.
After a one-goal loss in Cochrane Friday and an overtime setback at Timmins Saturday, the Voodoos came out strong in earning the decision Sunday grabbing a 3-0 lead before the opening stanza was 10 minutes old.
Eric Nagy put Powassan in front 52 seconds into the contest before Francois Lemelin added to the visitors lead at 5:33.
Lemelin notched another midway through the frame as he struck shorthanded for his third tally since joining the club earlier this month.
Powassan kept coming in the second period tacking on three more on a power play marker from Nathaniel McLeod and even strength efforts courtesy of Michael Silveri and Nicholas Siracuse.
Iroquois Falls starter Joe Sheppard was replaced by Matthew Camilleri after the sixth Voodoos goal.
The Eskis did get on the board late in the session as Tanner Bowditch picked one up for the home side with 29 seconds remaining.
Bowditch added his second of the afternoon and 10th overall 4:18 into the third before Powassan’s Daniel Walker converted on a man advantage opportunity nine minutes later.
The goals kept coming late as Walker, Alexi Rivet and Tyler Peters all tallied in the final three minutes of the contest as did Alex Mitsionis for Iroquois Falls to wrap things up offensively.
Lemelin also had two assists for a four-point day while Jake Staples dished out three helpers and Silveri picked up a pair for the winners.
Mario Cavaliere posted the win for the Voodoos making 39 saves as the wrapped up the road trip with a 1-1-1 record.
Sheppard suffered the defeat allowing six against on 24 attempts while Camilleri handled 34 of the 38 shots he faced in relief.
NOJHL action resumes Wednesday on two fronts as the Soo Eagles welcome the Rayside-Balfour Canadians to Pullar Stadium while the Espanola Express host the Elliot Lake Wildcats to the Regional Recreation Complex in a pair of 7 p.m. starts.
