Therrien shines as Eskimos top Beavers

BLIND RIVER – Richard Therrien scored once and dished out five assists to help lead his Abitibi Eskimos past the Blind River Beavers 8-5 Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.

The hometown Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Samuel Wilbur and Corey McEwen only to see the Eskimos storm back with three of their own before the opening stanza was complete.

Notching those markers were Corey Dubbledam, Kevin Walker and Aaron Kerr.

In the middle session Abitibi struck for three more tallies off the sticks of Therrien, Daniel Villeneuve and Nick Fountain with Scott Marshall countering for the Beavers.

Brandon Bazinet brought Blind River closer early in the third, but Therrien set-up Fountain and Kealey Cummings to put the visitors in control before Paul Muio found the back of the net late for the Beavers to round out the day’s scoring.

Jackson Winkler finished up with 47 saves to pick up the win helping Abitibi improve to 10-13-0-1 overall with the victory.

Aaron Cormier started for Blind River, who fell to 5-15-2-4. He had 28 stops while affiliate James Orton stopped two of four attempts faced in a brief relief appearance.

NOJHL action resumes Wednesday as Sudbury hosts Elliot Lake at 7:30 p.m.
