Thunderbirds remain unbeaten at home

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds kept their unbeaten run as the home team this season in tact Sunday as they derailed the Espanola Express 6-0 Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie got the game’s opening tally 7:11 into the contest as Matthew Mitchell notched his 12th goal of the season for the lone marker of the session.

The Thunderbirds blew the contest open in the middle stanza striking five times in under a 10-minute span to take full control.

Drake Pilon put the host up by two at 5:38 while Matthew Caruso collected his 27th goal of the season a couple shifts later to make it 3-0.

Three quick strikes later in the frame saw the Soo onslaught continue as Darian Pilon, Joey Miller and another by Caruso put the T-Birds up by six through 40 minutes of play.

Defensive play was the order for the final frame as it went scoreless as the Soo improved to 26-0 as the home team this season and 46-5-1-0 overall.

Zach Senecal and Brandon Grandinetti dished out two assists apiece for the T-Birds.

Brendon Gordon only had to make 14 stops to post his second consecutive shutout and third in his past four starts for the league-leading Thunderbirds.

Simon Wood was definitely the busier of the two netminders as the Espanola goaltender faced 44 attempts in defeat for the Express.
