Thunderbirds skate to 11th straight win

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Nathan Hebert had a goal and two assists while Nathan Warren stopped all 18 shots he faced to help lead the Soo Thunderbirds to their 11th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory, a 3-0 decision over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Friday at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Jaren Bellini picked up the eventual game-winning goal with his ninth of the season 12:35 into the contest.

Brett Jeffries then added to the Sault Ste. Marie lead early in the middle frame to extend the cushion to a pair through 40 minutes.

Hebert then rounded out the night’s scoring with a second to go complete the T-Birds 11th straight triumph.

The shutout by Warren was his NOJHL-leading third of the season as he also lowered his goals-against average to a league-best 1.50 overall while raising his save percentage to .938, which is also tops.

Victor-Olivier Courchesne made 24 stops in defeat for the Gold Miners, who were blanked for the first time this season.
