Thunderbirds tame Wildcats

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – Five goals in the first 30 minutes of the game was enough to help the Soo Thunderbirds defeat the Elliot Lake Wildcats 5-2 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Centennial Arena.

Chad Lopez did give the Wildcats the early lead as he connected 68 seconds into the contest with his fifth of the season.

Sault Ste. Marie countered by tallying three times in a four and a half minute span to go up 3-1 on markers by Nathan Hebert, Matthew Mitchell and captain Brett Jeffries, who notched the eventual game-winner at 8:03.

Elliot Lake got one back before the first was complete courtesy of Spencer MacLean at 18:06.

The middle session saw the Thunderbirds tack on two more to round out the scoring on efforts from Matt Caruso and Izaak Del Mastro.

Nathan Warren made 20 saves to pick up the win for the T-Birds.

Al Rogers faced 47 shots in defeat for the Wildcats in his NOJHL debut.
