Thunderbirds to appear in movie with Trailer Park Boys cast

Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (Oct. 30, 2012) – While defending their league, playoff and provincial championships this season, the Soo Thunderbirds also have their sights on a new challenge: Hollywood. Players and staff from the team are set to appear in an upcoming movie, Swearnet, starring the cast of Trailer Park Boys.

The film, which was shot in Sault Ste. Marie in August and September, features Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay and Mike Smith, who played Ricky, Julian and Bubbles on the Showcase original series. With a scene taking place at a hockey game, members of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League team filled in on the ice and behind the bench.

Producers got in touch with club management, who jumped at the chance to get involved with the project. “We thought it would be a lot of fun and the guys would really enjoy it,” said Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain, adding the shoot will also give his organization a chance to boost its profile a bit. “Anything you can do to put yourself out there will ultimately help.”

Swearnet will also feature former TPB castman Pat Roach, who played the no-shirt-wearing, cheeseburger-obsessed Randy, along with Canadian comedian Tom Green, prop comic Carrot Top, and former Skid Row lead singer Sebastian Bach. The film is scheduled to be released in 2013.

Although being a part of the production was fun and exciting for the players, it was also a lot of work, admitted Cain, in his third season with the Thunderbirds, who won the 2012 Dudley-Hewitt Cup. “You really appreciate what they do,” he said. “The production is very organized, and everything has a purpose. It gave the kids a different perspective on the industry, and it’s something they’ll probably never forget.”
