NOJHL names  Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that a trio of goaltenders in Brett Young of the Cochrane Crunch, Aaron Mackay of the Elliot Lake Wildcats and Josh Horner of the Iroquois Falls Eskis have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Sept. 27.

BRETT YOUNG, (G) COCHRANE CRUNCH – In two starts last week, the 20-year-old from Livonia, Mich., won both of them helping keep the Crunch undefeated while handing the Rayside-Balfour Canadians and Soo Thunderbirds their first losses of the season.

Young started with a 37-save performance in a 4-3 win vs. Rayside-Balfour Thursday and followed that up by stopping 43 of 45 shots in a 4-2 triumph over the Thunderbirds.

He sports a 5-0 overall record early on and leads the NOJHL with a .956 save percentage and sits second in goals-against average at 1.60.

AARON MACKAY, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – The soon-to-be 18-year-old netminder, who hails from Millerville, Alta., stopped 53 of 54 shots he faced over the weekend helping the Wildcats sweep a two-game home-and-home against the Soo Eagles.

MacKay started with 20 saves Friday in Elliot Lake’s narrow 2-1 win at Centennial Arena then posted his first NOJHL shutout Saturday, turning aside all 33 attempts he faced along the way in a 4-0 victory at Pullar Stadium.

Early in his tenure in the league, MacKay leads the way in average at 1.47 and is second in save percentage at .953.

JOSH HORNER, (G) IROQUOIS FALLS ESKIS – The 20-year-old Shawville, Que., product saw plenty of rubber in three appearances seeing 163 shots fired his way while stopping 153 of them to record a .939 save percentage for the week.

Included in Horner’s efforts, was making 49 stops in the Eskis 6-3 win over Rayside-Balfour Friday.

He also did his best to keep Iroquois Falls in the game against the Soo Thunderbirds making an incredible 68 saves while only allowing three to get by him in a 4-1 loss. The fourth Sault Ste. Marie was scored into an empty net.

Horner also stopped 40 attempts in a relief appearance vs. Timmins earlier in the week.
