Pinder paces Thunderbirds past Rock
TIMMINS, Ont. – Matt Pinder scored once and set-up the game-winner, while his club was shorthanded, as the Soo Thunderbirds defeated the Timmins Rock 5-2 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee Sunday afternoon at McIntyre Arena.
Pinder, who has tallied at least once in each of the Thunderbirds first eight games to begin the season, notched his ninth 7:45 into the contest for the lone marker of the first period.
Sault Ste. Marie then struck three times in rapid succession in the latter stages of the middle frame to go up 4-0 on markers supplied by Brett Jeffries, Joey Miller, while the T-Birds were down a man, and Jake Behse.
Jaren Bellini increased the visitors lead 9:08 into the third as they took control of the contest.
Timmins did get one with seven minutes to go off the stick of Devin Panzeca before adding one just over a minute later from Zachary Kercz to round out the scoring.
Nathan Warren made 30 saves to record the win for the Thunderbirds who improved to 7-1 on the season.
Logan Ferrington started for the Rock and played two periods in suffering the loss allowing four against on 36 attempts.
Matthew Nixon stopped 15 of 16 in 20 minutes of relief as Timmins fell to 3-4 overall.
